The Centurion's Wife
by Davis Bunn & Janette Oke
added to the SCCS Book Club on December 9, 2009

Remember the Bible story of the centurion who asked Jesus to heal his servant? When Jesus asked him to lead him to his home, the soldier responded, "Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, just say the word and he will be healed."

This historical fiction follows the centurion after his servant is healed. The Centurion is called back to Jerusalem to investigate the loss of Jesus' body after His entombment. Paralleling this story line is a Jewish woman whose mistress is Pontius Pilate's wife. Pilate's wife, too, is fascinated with the loss of Jesus’ body and sends her maidservant to find out what has happened to it. Soon these two characters' lives become intertwined by their individual quests. Their lives are forever changed by what they discover.

Aside from being a very interesting story the book also serves as an insight into one of the great mysteries of our Catholic faith. The characters and their stories help us connect the historical event of Christ's ressurection to the people of the time and how they reacted to what was happening. That, in turn, may give us a different, more real perspective on our faith.
